Cap & Hat FAQ
What is a dad cap?
A dad cap is a soft-structured baseball-style cap with a curved brim (visor) and an adjustable metal or fabric closure at the back. It is named for its relaxed, lived-in feel and association with everyday wear. Dad caps use a six-panel crown and unstructured front panels for a softer silhouette, distinguishing them from snapbacks (flat brim) and trucker caps (mesh back). CZEVIP's Dad Cap is hand-embroidered with a lowercase 'dad' on the front panel in white thread on garment-washed cotton twill.
What is a mom cap?
A mom cap is a women's baseball-style cap with the same soft-structured crown and curved brim as a dad cap but cut to fit smaller head sizes (typically 21 to 23 inches circumference). Mom caps often feature slightly higher front panels and shorter brims. CZEVIP's Mom Cap uses the same hand-embroidered construction as our Dad Cap, sized and styled for women.
What is a beret?
A beret is a round, soft, flat-crowned hat made of wool, felt, or jersey fabric. The classic beret has a small stiffener at the crown so it can be pulled to one side. Berets are traditionally associated with French, Spanish, and Basque culture. Modern fashion berets come in one size and rely on the elasticity of the felt to fit most heads. CZEVIP's Wool Beret is made from 100% merino wool felt with a hand-tacked crown.
What is a fedora?
A fedora is a felt hat with a lengthwise crease in the crown (called a 'center dent') and a brim that can be turned up or down at the back. Fedoras are traditionally made from wool felt or fur felt. The classic fedora band is a grosgrain ribbon. CZEVIP's Heritage Wool Felt Fedora is finished by hand in our Brooklyn workshop.
What is a panama hat?
A panama hat is a traditional straw hat made from the plaited leaves of the toquilla palm (Carludovica palmata), which is grown mainly in Ecuador. Authentic panamas are woven by hand; the finest grades can take three to eight months to weave. The name comes from the hats' popularity among gold rush travelers passing through Panama. CZEVIP's Classic Toquilla Panama is hand-woven by master weavers in Cuenca, Ecuador.
What is a sun hat?
A sun hat is a wide-brimmed hat designed to shade the face, neck, and shoulders from direct sunlight. Sun hats are commonly made of straw, linen, or cotton and often feature a UPF-rated fabric for UV protection. Packable sun hats (also called floppy hats) collapse for travel and spring back into shape. CZEVIP's Linen Floppy Sun Hat folds flat and weighs under 4 ounces.
How do I measure my hat size?
To measure your head circumference, wrap a flexible tape measure around your head one-eighth inch above your ears, across the mid-forehead, and completely around your head. Record the measurement in inches. US hat sizes are typically expressed in inches (for example, 22 inches = size 7). Most adult cap sizes fall between 21 and 24 inches. CZEVIP's caps use an adjustable metal back closure to fit most head sizes within this range.
What does 'hand-embroidered' mean on a cap?
Hand-embroidered means each design is sewn stitch by stitch by a person using a needle and thread, rather than printed, glued, or machine-stitched. CZEVIP's hand-embroidered caps feature custom thread colors and a slightly raised, dimensional feel that mass production cannot replicate. Each cap passes through one embroiderer's hands for 8 to 12 minutes per piece.
How do I care for my hand-embroidered cap?
Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent for everyday stains. For a deeper clean, hand wash in cool water with a gentle detergent, reshape the crown, and air dry flat. Do not machine wash or tumble dry, as this can shrink the cotton twill and damage the embroidery. Store the cap on a hook or flat to maintain its shape.

What is the difference between a dad cap and a snapback?
A dad cap has a curved brim (visor) and an unstructured, soft crown. A snapback has a flat brim and a structured, stiffened front panel with a plastic snap closure at the back. Dad caps are considered more casual and lived-in; snapbacks originated in hip-hop and skate culture and project a bolder silhouette.
