The four numbers every hat brand founder should know.
Before you start, you need to fix four numbers. They decide everything else.
- Target retail price. Divide by 4 - 5 to land on your wholesale / FOB cost. A USD 34 hat should cost you USD 6.80 - 8.50 to land in the US, before shipping, duties, and Amazon FBA fees.
- MOQ (minimum order quantity). 1000 units is the industry standard for custom OEM. Below that, your per-unit cost will spike 2 - 3x and you will not have enough inventory for paid ads to be profitable.
- Initial inventory budget. A 1000-unit first run typically costs USD 7000 - 12000 all-in for a cotton cap, including samples, production, and shipping. A second run of 2000 - 3000 units brings per-unit cost down 15 - 25 percent.
- Reorder cycle. Plan for 60 - 90 days between reorders if you are selling through Amazon or DTC at 30 - 50 units / day. Order early.
